Dear Backers,

Here’s the fortnightly update on the TINY1. Manufacturing has started!

First 80 boards after assembly!

We have manufactured 300 boards as of yesterday night.

They are undergoing quality control checks right now. After the QC tests, we’ll be more confident of manufacturing higher quantities. The boards will be arriving at our assembly facility sometime mid next week, after impedance tests, flashing of software and testing of sensors.

Development

GPS antenna tuning is completed. We’ve received the adjustments required to improve the GPS antenna performance. Those would be introduced in the batch 2 boards.

We’re manufacturing ahead of the adjustments because that will cause a 2 week delay and we will miss the solar eclipse. The batch 1 boards will have a small 4mm bump on the top. That is to ensure the GPS functionality for the Star Map. Pending tests, the 2nd batch may or may not have the bump.

Antenna bump prototype. The shape may change slightly and it will be dyed a suitable color before it is delivered. The bump may become a limited edition depending on the test results.

Manufacturing

As of 13th July 9PM Singapore time (GMT +8), we have manufactured 300 units of the printed circuit boards, under close supervision of Ashprit. We’re expecting the Quality Control assessment today or by Monday. We hope to have good news of starting assembly into TINY1 cameras next week. Based on current schedule, the 1st hundred boards should arrive on schedule at our assembly facility on 21st July.

As of today afternoon, 10/10 have been rigorously tested and all have passed.

The remaining boards will come in on a rolling basis. We will provide the production estimates after the first batch goes through assembly. Expect a new update in 1-2 weeks.

Qualcomm chips assembled with RAM. A very complex and challenging process.

Dear Backers,

Here’s the fortnightly update on the TINY1

We have received 12 reworked boards from the previous iteration at our office. These will go to our assembly plant to test manufacturing processes.

We have taken delivery of the bare Printed Circuit Boards now. They are undergoing verification tests.

Manufacturing will start next week. After which they will be sent to the assembly plant for assembly, packing and delivery. There are still hurdles ahead, but we’re doing all we can to ensure a smooth delivery.

Development

Long exposure is getting more stable. We just received the new firmware and we are testing it. The camera can switch between long exposure and short exposure mode now without crashing.

Over The Air update is still ongoing. The TINY1 camera will be able to receive new firmware update via OTA. Alternatively we will send a patch to enable the OTA update shortly after delivery of the first batch.

GPS antenna tuning is on going. We met some difficulties in securing the Printed Circuit boards directly from the supplier, as they are vacuum packed from the factory. Separating the test units from the package would cause dust and humidity ingress, affecting reliability. We avoided that by only opening the package at the assembly plant. As such, there was some delay added to the GPS antenna tuning as a result. We’re exploring several options to ensure that this does not cause a delay in our delivery.

Manufacturing

We have received the Printed Circuit board on 23rd June. We have started moving the components to the assembly house. Assembly of the first 6 boards to test the manufacturing process has begun. We’re expecting to see the results next week.

Ashprit is going on site to observe the manufacturing process of the Printed Circuit Boards to ensure the timeline and quality standards are met.

Here’s the timeline we are working with:

23 June 2017: Receive Printed Circuit Board (done)

23rd June - 7th July: Verification and Quality Assurance/Antenna Tuning (ongoing)

7th July - 21st July: Assembly of PCB (on schedule)

21st - 24th July: Shipment to manufacturer for final assembly

24th July - 7th August: Manufacturing and packaging

7th August - 14th August: Shipment of first batch

Sincerely,

Grey

Dear Backers,

Here’s the fortnightly update on the TINY1

Moon with the Twin headed Eagle of Austria - by TINY1

First an apology for the delayed update. I have been in Vienna for the past two weeks, discussing distribution with partners in Europe and understanding import laws in Europe. It’ll help us ship to European countries more smoothly when delivery starts. We were waiting for key updates before we released a backer update as well.

Met up with fellow Indiegogo fundraiser Mikme.

There is a delay in delivery. We are facing several issues at the mass production stage. We are very sorry to face another delay so close to delivery.

To expedite delivery, we’re changing the manufacturing plan to go for the full 1000 units in 1 process after a 2 week quality assurance and verification program. TINY1 will be shipped on a rolling basis.

We have more details in the update below.

Development

GPS antenna tuning could not be done in the laboratory we that we have in Singapore. We’ll be sending the PCB to our antenna manufacturer for tuning instead. It’ll take approximately 2 weeks. It will add to the timeline as it’ll require changes in components to ensure the cameras delivered works within specifications.

Long exposure settings works more robustly now. We are able to get long exposures up to 2 minutes as of now. We’re working on making the software more stable before the release.

We’re working on an Over The Air update for the TINY1. This allows you to get the most stable firmware for best performance of the TINY1 camera. Over time we will also add new functionalities to make TINY1 even better.

Manufacturing

The main delay we faced was from manufacturing. The PCB manufacturing house required clarifications on the PCB design following the last revision. The clarification took up all the buffer we had.

It also caused us to miss key manufacturing bookings with the PCB manufacturer. The PCB manufacture had a ramp up with other customers for the June holidays and we were pushed back in the queue. We were only informed last week and we were trying to get clear time lines from them since.

Once again, we are very sorry for the delay.

Here’s the latest timeline we are working with:

23 June 2017: Receive Printed Circuit Board

23rd June - 7th July: Verification and Quality Assurance/Antenna Tuning

7th July - 21st July: Assembly of PCB

21st - 24th July: Shipment to manufacturer for final assembly

24th July - 7th August: Manufacturing and packaging

7th August - 14th August: Shipment

Sincerely,

Grey

Dear Backers,

Here’s the fortnightly update on the TINY1

Last week has been one of the most exciting weeks in TinyMOS. I was invited to speak at TEDxUbud, Bali. I shared with the 450 audience about TinyMOS bringing astronomy imaging to everyone. It was especially amazing as the stage was in the open, under a canopy of stars.

It was truly inspiring to share the same stage with the other speakers who are doing so much to contribute to the world. Especially Kevin Kumala aka the person who dissolved and drank a piece of bio-plastic his company produces. His vision is to produce biodegradable bio-plastic to replace petroleum based plastic that causes environmental damage.

You can find out more at https://www.facebook.com/TEDxUbud/. We’ll share with you when they produce a recording of the event.

We also had a backer meet up at our office. 35 backers turned up for the meet up! We’re thrilled to meet you guys and it was a wonderful experience to say the least. The participants got to touch and try the TinyMOS pre-production prototypes and it was great fun. I hope we managed to share our journey with you more often in settings like this. Here’s our Facebook post http://bit.ly/2qroQKx

Tomorrow I will be going to Austria under the GoAustria GIN program http://bit.ly/2qruNqw  to talk to like-minded startups, investors and retailers. We hope to bring astronomy to Europe soon!

Development

We spoke to the antenna supplier and they’ve picked up the GPS tuning. We’ll expect it to be resolved within a week of getting the first few pieces of the production batch.

We’re working actively on building the software update capability. That would make sure that the TINY1 cameras you receive can get constant updates for stability and exciting new features!

Manufacturing

Same as before, manufacturing is on track with the same schedule as before. We’ll update if anything changes!

Best regards,

Grey

Dear Backers,

We have a couple of exciting updates for you’ll.

On popular demand, the ‘Solar Imaging Filter’ is now available! You can use this to view the upcoming Solar Eclipse this August. The perks are available for a limited period and only to backers who have ordered the Tiny1 before April 20 2017.

Make sure you select the correct perk. If you have ordered the Tiny1 and a 100m lens, or any kit that includes the 100m lens, please select ‘Solar Imaging Filter’. The filter will attach in front of the 100mm lens.

If you have ordered just the Tiny1 camera without the 100mm lens, please select ‘Solar Imaging Pack’ so you get the filter and a 100mm lens.

Once you have placed your order, we will manually add the filter to your order on Backerkit, so please allow at least 2 weeks for it to be seen on your Backerkit order.

Now to update #2, we are organising a Backers Meetup at our office in Singapore.
